Staying Cute While Staying Warm
By Jenny Langerman
One challenge of living in a place like Vermont is staying warm while still looking cute when the weather gets cold. There is nothing more unsatisfying than planning a super cute outfit just for it to be hidden under layers of thermal wear and parkas; unfortunately, braving the cold in order to show off your style is even more painful (I learned the hard way that Vermont winters are no joke!).
As a result, I have learned to tailor my winter wardrobe approach: rather than viewing outerwear as an adversary, I’ve come to deem it an ally. With all different styles and fits, coats do not have to be just something you throw on at the end -- they can be fun pieces around which to construct an outfit. With that, here is a collage of outerwear inspiration for you to peruse, with some of the hottest looks of the season you can incorporate into your daily ensembles to help you bundle up like a baddie this winter.
Puffer Jackets: Playing on a childhood staple, these jackets are funky, breathable toppings that will keep you warm without weighing you down. And, selecting a brightly colored or metallic puffer jacket offers a fun alternative to the darker, muted tones particular to colder seasons.
Leather: While leather is timeless, it has resurged in 2020 with a more casual feel and aesthetic versatility. Oversized leather in particular is an essential you won’t want to miss!
Wool Overcoats: Often sitting at calf or knee-length, this European-style overcoat lends itself to a classic, put-together look. Try layering with a turtleneck or add some booties to look extra euro-chic!
Plaid: Vermont is already way ahead of the curve with this! From flannel to fluff, adding plaid breaks up neutral, solid colors in an ensemble. Plaid is also extremely versatile, as it can be styled formally just as easily as it can be casually.
Faux fur: This is the perfect option for those who dare to go bold, and you will be sure to radiate elegance and sophistication. Faux fur coats make for great ensemble centerpieces and are easy outfit starters -- monochromatic and/or simple wear underneath lets the jacket do all the talking.
Happy styling! xx
